Ethnographic Museum Burgas will create an exhibition on the Bulgarian refugees in Burgas reagion

Project for an exhibition "The Bulgarian refugees in our memory" of the Regional Historical Museum Burgas received additional funding from the session of the Ministry of Culture for activities in the field of museums and visual arts.

The idea of ​​the current exhibition is a natural extension to the efforts of specialists from the Ethnographic exposition of RHM Burgas to preserve its rich collection of traditional costumes. The greatest diversity of costumes and jewellery among them are those of the Bulgarians from Asia Minor, Western and Eastern Thrace, who had the uneasy fate to be refugees in Burgas region. Among the best preserved and interesting costumes are the exhibits from Catal Tepe, Kodzhabunar, Malak Dervent, Komotini, Uzunkupru, Pishmankyoy and Kufalovo. Bulgarians from all these places were displaced from their homes in the period 1912-1913 and entered the new Bulgarian state as refugees - immigrants.

100 years later the refugee crisis again a topic of great importance for the Bulgarian society. We hear often comparisons between the refugees then and now. Answer to the question what are the similarities and differences between these two historic events, will be offered by experts from RIM Burgas through temporary exhibition about the life and fate of refugees in the early twentieth century. The preserved exhibits of costumes and decorations will demonstrate the diversity of their culture and the impact on shaping the ethnic composition of the population in the region. The exhibition will presented also the setting up of district Sarafovo and the refugee loan on 22/12/1926, which the Bulgarian country took to give land to the new settlers and build the so called Sharon houses in towns along the southern Black Sea coast.
