The International Exhibition "Apollonia Pontica - in the Footsteps of the Archaeologists" opens in RHM Sofia

RHM Burgas participates with own exhibits in the international exhibition "Apollonia Pontica - in the footsteps of archaeologists". It tells the story of the city, told through archaeological studies that have been ongoing for over a century. The exhibition will be opened on December 13, 2018 at 18:00 h. in the halls of the History Museum of Sofia.

The Apollonia Pontica exhibition - in the footsteps of archaeologists - is the next project, continuing the tradition of successful scientific and cultural exchange between Bulgaria and France. It is a story about the city and its adjacent territories with its institutions, architecture, everyday life, necropolises. Geographically it corresponds to the location of modern Sozopol.

The chronological framework puts the foundation of Apollonia Pontica in 610 BC. of migrants from Miletus in southwestern Asia Minor. The advantage is that it is only a day's sailing from Byzantium and quickly becomes a thriving city. In 72 BC, Apollonia was robbed by the armies of Mark Terenzi Lucull. He is referring to the statue of Apollo in Rome, and the city is forcibly annexed to Roman possessions.

Archaeological studies of Apollonia Pontica began by French diplomat Baron Julius Alexander Degan in 1904. They were continued by the most famous Bulgarian researchers at the time. Excavations are held at varying intensities throughout the 20th century, and since 2002, a French team has been included in the study of Apollonia.

The exhibition contains over 500 artefacts, organized according to male, female and children's activities. Among them are: a ritually bent sword, a bronze wreath with gold, banquet service, gold jewelry, tweezers and a blush with make-up blush, pacifiers, dolls, figurines of various animals, etc.

"Apollonia Pontica - in the footsteps of archaeologists" can be seen in the period 14 December 2018 - 10 March 2019 in the Temporary Expositions Hall of the Regional History Museum - Sofia (1 Banski Square).
