For the first time, the Valchitrуn gold treasure will be on display in the Burgas Museum

Some of the most impressive Thracian gold objects can be seen in Burgas for this year's International Night of the Museum. The exhibition "The Thracian Gold Treasure from Valchitrun" will be opened on 18 May (Saturday) at 18:00 h. in the Trezore Hall of the Archaeological Museum (21 Bogoridi Str.). It is organized in partnership between Regional historical museum Burgas and the Regional historical museum Pleven, the property of which are the exhibits. The Valchitrun treasure will be in the city during the summer season and is one of the elite exhibitions that await the citizens of Burgas for the 15th International Night of Museums.

This is the largest Thracian gold treasure ever discovered in Bulgaria. It is made up of nine vessels with 88% purity of gold and a total weight of 12.5 kg, with only one of the objects weighing 4.5 kg. According to experts, the valuable artefacts are from the end of the Bronze Age (1600-1200 BC). This is the period of the so-called "Mycenae Thrace", which is exactly described in Homer's Iliad. It is assumed that the gold vessels were used in the cult practices of the Thracian kings-priests. The treasure was discovered in 1924 near today's village of Valchitrun, Pleven.
