A new gold find was discovered in the Rusokastro Fortress research
Friday, 01 Sep 2017 - Archeological Museum
During the excavations of the Rusokastro fortress this summer, archaeologists have discovered another gold find. Near the monumental stone staircase unveiled few days ago, they found a gold coin - perpera, minted in the period 1325-1328. The face presents the image of St. Mary and on the reverse side is Jesus Christ together with the Byzantine emperors Andronicus II and Andronicus III Palaeologus. This is the second gold coin of the first half of the 14th century, discovered during the excavations of the Rusokastro fortress. In 2016, another similar coin, minted between 1341 and 1348, was found in front of the western fortress wall.

Analysis of coin finds from season 2017 is yet to come. In addition to gold, this year many copper coins have been discovered, including such from the Bulgarian tsars Konstantin Tih and Ivan Alexander. The silver coins are from Tsar Ivan Alexander, Venice and the Duke of Athens. The detailed analysis of the coins will be prepared after they have been cleaned and conservated in a restoration workshop.
The excavations of the Rusokastro Fortress are led by Milen Nikolov and Dorothea Girdziyska from the Regional Historical Museum Burgas. They are funded by Kameno Municipality, Bulgarian Ministry of Culture and National Museum of History.
