There is a monumental stone staircase of the Rusokastro fortress

The excavations of the Rusokastro fortress have revealed a monumental stone staircase leading from the foot of the fortress castle to its interior. The footsteps are made of large stone blocks, bond with mortar. Unfortunately, many of them have been removed in recent time for construction material by inhabitants of the surrounding villages. The staircase lies directly over the rock and leads to the entrance to the fortress castle, which is also localized by the archaeologists. It is also quite damaged by the extraction of stones for modern construction during the first half of the 20th century. The staircase is 12 m long and 2.05 m wide, overcoming a displacement of 5 m. This is the only place from which the castle can be entered. This is one of the largest similar medieval sites in Bulgaria with an area of nearly 2 decares.
Ceramics and coins from the 13th to 14th centuries have been discovered around the staircase. Fragments of frescoes that have yet to be analyzed by medieval painting experts have been discovered in the upper part.

Rusokastro fortress is being explored by a team of the Burgas Museum, led by Milen Nikolov and Dorotea Gyurdziyska. The excavations are funded by the Municipality of Kameno, the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Bulgaria and the National Museum of History.
