"Knitting of fisherman nets" from Chengene skele becomes intangible cultural heritage

The nomination of the Regional Historical Museum Burgas and Municipality Burgas "Knitting of fisherman nets: millennial craft from Burgas Bay" was awarded today at a ceremony for the entry of new elements in the National list of intangible cultural heritage, held in "Sredets" Gallery of the Bulgarian Ministry of culture. The organizations with nominations, which also make a commitment regarding their protection and promotion, were honoured by Minister Rashidov with the award "Golden Age" of the Ministry of Culture - seal of Tsar Simeon the Great.
The Burgas candidacy was represented by Dimitar Yanchev - Chairman of NGO "Morski sgovor" from the fisherman village Chengene skele, part of which is the proposed bearer of the traditional craft - Stalin Iliev.
Candidacy "Knitting of fisherman nets: millennial craft from Burgas Bay" is among the nominees, which will be proposed for inclusion in the World list of UNESCO. National representative list so far has been replenished four times - in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 and this is the second application of RHM Burgas, which managed to reach the international stage. In 2008, the custom Nestinarstvo was deservedly declared a World Intangible Cultural Heritage and entered into the UNESCO list.

Regional Historical Museum - Burgas chose for its nomination exactly this characteristic activity of the local population, because the craft "knitting of fishing tackle" is dying in its traditional form. The archaeological finds - knitting tools, weights for nets and more, found on Cape Foros, near the Burgas district Kraimorie, testified that this craft was practised in Burgas Bay since ancient times. Municipality Burgas aims to support the preservation of it by building an ethnographic complex in Chengene skele, where the living bearers of tradition will be able to demonstrate and transmit it to new generations.
