Field expedition after information on found fossilized animal bones near Aheloy, Municipality Pomorie

A team from the Natural History Museum of Burgas responded to a signal over found fossilized animal bones near the village of Aheloy, Municipality Pomorie.
The signal was sent to us by the Russian journalist Nikolai Zamyatin, who found them at the beach near Aheloy. After similar signal, at the beginning of 2013, the museum received two valuable fossils, found during construction works in Gorno Ezerovo.

The findings in Aheloi really resembled fossilized bones of ancient mammals. In the museum collection there are already such samples and the inspection of Aheloy Beach confirmed our assumptions that these are geological formations already known to our specialist.
The geological strata of this site formed 10-12 million years ago during the Pliocene and is characteristic for river-lake littoral deposits. When the layers begin to compact, the carbonate substance found in them dissolves, infiltrates and deposits in the gaps as carbonate gels. The observed geological formation in Aheloy are result of such phenomena.

We would like to thank Mr. Zamyatin for being responsible!
We call on all citizens who find similar formations or archaeological findings to notify Regional Burgas Museum over the telephone numbers/ emails, provided on our Contact page!
