Association "Bulgarian Museums" actively participated in the work of the international conference "Act for heritage"

From October 24-26, 2019, the international conference "Act for heritage" was held in Nicosia, Cyprus. It was organized by the Council of Europe and aimed to present the latest data on the cultural heritage threat related to the wars in Iraq and Syria, trafficking and the illegal market for cultural valuables. The Republic of Bulgaria was represented by Alexander Traikov, Director of the IOCN Directorate at the Ministry of Culture, and Maria Todorova, Head of the DCN Department in the same Directorate.

The third member of the delegation was the representative of the Bulgarian Museums Association Dr. Milen Nikolov, director of the Regional historical museum - Burgas and chairman of the Control Committee of the Association.

The four modules of the conference developed plans aimed at minimizing the trafficking and destruction of cultural monuments, especially those threatened by hostilities and treasure hunts.

Some of the proposals of the Bulgarian Museums Association have been accepted and have become a reference point in the final document, which will formally represent the Council of Europe's position regarding the protection of cultural values. There was also an urgent need to sign the Nicosia Convention, presented in 2017 as a document that protects the cultural heritage to the fullest.
