Come to the Carnival on Shrove Monday, 18 March 2013 at 11:00 Ethnographic Museum!
Thursday, 14 Mar 2013 - Ethnographical Museum

Join our Carnival on 18 March 2013 from 11:00 in the Ethnographic Museum!

Shrove Monday is known as "clean" or "pesi" Monday.
The Bulgarian woman clean and arranged her house in order to purify her thoughts, to overcome chaos and sort her world. A day is called also "pesi" because it celebrate the health of domestic dogs.
Up to the 50s and 60s of the twentieth century, in the Bulgarian villages and towns during the week between Sirnitsa and St.Theodore's day children dress up and visited the villager's homes. The hosts welcomed them with great joy and feast them generously. This is our Bulgarian version of Halloween.
Students from 3 Burgas' schools will show their unique masks and homemade costumes at the carnival hosted in the Ethnographic complex in Burgas.

We will expect you in Brakalov`s house (Ethnographic Exposition, Burgas, Slavyanska St. 69), dressed in your Halloween costumes.
Here you will learn more about the Bulgarian Carnival.

The First Day of March
Thursday, 28 Feb 2013 - Ethnographical Museum

March 1 is not an ordinary day. According to the popular belief, if in the morning everything has been done by the rules throughout the month the weather will be good; there will be no hail and frost; the snakes and lizards will run away; the bad stuff will be scalded and any change will be for good!
Before sunrise every housewife has to put out white and red cloth to make Granny Marta laugh. It is important this to be done first by a cheerful and good woman. In the village of Fakia the women take out only a red cloth due to a fear that the white can bring snow and frost.

On the first of March people try not to quarrel among themselves, which could anger the short-tempered Granny Marta.
On this day heavy work is not done, women do not spin or wove, sew, wash, knead, and men do not cut wood or plow.
The most important, of course, is the tying of martenitsas on arms, necks, baby hats. Granny Marta shines with happiness, when she sees that people have martenitsas in her honor, when she meets young people and brides with their hands full, when she enters clean and tidy homes. Bulgarians do anything to make her happy and cheer because Granny Marta is no ordinary grandmother ...

Let this magic made of twisted red and white threads protect us from all evil - visible and invisible, to bring us all good health, wealth, good weather and hope for sunshine!

Eco Martenitsas this year again in the Natural History Museum of Burgas
Monday, 18 Feb 2013 - Natural-History Museum

In the Bulgarian tradition the holiday of Baba Marta is a symbol of spring and is a wish for health and prosperity. In the past martenitsas have served as amulets that protect those who wear them from harm and misfortune. Thus when martenitsas are made they should be charged with positive energy. At the Natural History Museum of Burgas this year again, we are twisting white and red threads for health and wellbeing. Various minerals can be added to aid love, health, luck, clear mind. This year the stones with strong impact, especially for luck, are jasper, lapis lazuli, blue sunny stone, obsidian, serpentinita, labradorite, amethyst and dark agates.

Our martenitsas we offer again at the symbolic price of 0.50 lv. The museum is open every weekday from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 17.00. This year the we offer another opportunity. In the last days of February, everyone can visit our Martenitza Workshop. So for the price of the entrance ticket to the museum, anyone who wants can create their own martenitzas as gifts for loved ones and choose minerals to knit in the white and red thread.

Happy and cheerful Trifon Zarezan!
Thursday, 31 Jan 2013 - Ethnographical Museum

February1st (or 14 February Old Style) is the day of Trifon Zarezan, wineries and winegrowers. The background of this holiday is associated with celebrations in honour of Dionysus – Thracian and Old Greek god of wine and revelry.

On this day we honour Saint Trifon. People believe that with his blessing the vineyards become fertile. So when the people gather on this day, the viticulturists (vine-growers) ritually look around for him and invite him to come to their vineyards. Then they utter incantations to be born so many grapes so even the saint himself can hide from their sight.

"- Hey Trifon, where are you, we do not see you?
- I can’t be seen from black and white grapes!"

On Trifon Zarezan grape vines are being pruned. Trimming of the grape everyone starts on their own. Viticulturist turns east, crosses himself and cut a few sticks. Then some wine is poured over the cut place and a call for prosperity is uttered. The men decorate with grape branches their hats and wine vessels. Three cut grape sticks are clipped together with a bunch of basil, tied with a red thread and put on the men-only table among the grape vines. The celebration participators, then, choose a king - a man, who is industrious, lucky and respected by all. They put on his head a crown of vine leaves. On the way back they carry him on their arms or pull him on a cart (car). After that the group of men visits the village houses, drinks and utters blessing. The last treat is offered in the home of the king.

With the "Meadow of patches" we will celebrate the birthday of Nature Park Strandzha at the Natural History Museum of Burgas
Wednesday, 23 Jan 2013 - Natural-History Museum

On January 24, 2013 at 16.00 hours, in the hall of the Natural History Museum Museum of Burgas (30 K.Fotinov St.) we will celebrate the birthday of the Nature Park Strandja. Rossen Vassilev from the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation will present the project "Meadow of patches", which will represent Bulgarian in the initiative "Wild flowers of Europe." The idea is that small pieces of cloth with patterns of painted, embroidered or woven flowers, will join in a big "carpet of connected patches". This carpet of flowers will first tour Bulgaria and then will become part of the European meadow.

Logically the patches added in Burgas, would have to present the most valuable flowers from the area, and these are certainly species from Strandzha. That's why exactly on the birthday of the nature park, its director Stefan Zlatarov and the biodiversity expert eng.Ivan Kamburov will introduce some of the most interesting flowers found in Strandza to serve as an inspiration to all participants.
Hosts from Natural History Museum have invited a wide variety of guests for presentations, because the project may include both children and adults as long as they are inspired by the wild flowers and can present in attractive way to the future viewers of "the meadow of patches."

The ladies from the association "Golden Fleece" - Zvezdets will have a special participation in this event with their beautiful works of natural wool collected from Strandzhan sheers and dyed with traditional colors made from plants growing in Strandzha. They will demonstrate not only their production to the participants, but will also show a part of their culinary skills.
