Regional Museum Burgas in the National Assembly with an exhibition dedicated to the Liberation of Burgas region
Monday, 07 Feb 2011 - Historical Museum

On February 9 at 11:00 in the lobby of the National Assembly, the exhibition of the Regional Historical Museum Burgas in partnership with Municipality Burgas - "The Liberation of Burgas region and the contribution of Lermontov family in the Russo-Turkish Liberation War and the restoration of Burgas in 1878" will be opened.
The exhibition presents the different story of Burgas region, which connects the southern coast and south-eastern Thrace. During the nineteenth century there were two Russo-Turkish wars - in 1828-29, and 1877-78 in this region, but they didn’t materialise the national liberation ideas of the local Bulgarian population.
For the liberation of Burgas region fought a certain Russian gentlefolk family, member of which is also the great Russian poet M. Yu. Lermontov. Nine talented military commanders and one volunteer – an open-hearted nurse, three generations accepted as their life mission the liberation of Bulgaria and specifically tied their fate to the Burgas region.
Today the contact with Lermontov family continues, the successors of Lermontov have created the foundation "Lermontov’s heritage" with branches worldwide, including Burgas.

Ethnographic Museum Burgas presents the traditional Christmas Eve table
Wednesday, 22 Dec 2010 - Ethnographical Museum

In connection with the upcoming Christmas holidays, Ethnographic Museum Burgas presents the traditional Christmas Eve table.

The traditional feast for Christmas Eve is symbolic; it recreates a special rite for fertility and good fortune. Everything that is put on the table - a ritual bread, garlic, corn, popcorn, beans, apples, dried fruits, honey, walnuts, quinces, should bring plenty. Arrange are only Lenten dishes strictly of odd number: 7, 9, 11, for example: sarmi (rolls) with sour cabbage leaves, stuffed peppers with rice, pumpkin pie (tikvenik). The more dishes, the richer will be the year. An old silver coin placed inside one of the dishes as a symbol of the property in the new year. According to the tradition, there are three types of ritual bread: the first one is dedicated to the holiday (“bogovitsa”, “bogova pita”, “svetets” (English: Saint) - a large round loaf decorated with dough), second type is dedicated to the farm labour and peasants (with various decorations) and the third one is meant for the carollers “koledari” ("rambled-bent" bagel).
The ritual table is censed by the eldest in the family. In Burgas region for the ethnographic group Zagorci this is the first “censed” dinner, and for the groups Ruptsi and Tronki, it is the second (after St. Nicholas' Day).
On Christmas Eve the fire should not be put out because it is associated with the birth of the "Young God" during this certain night. The Yule log “budnik” is burning in the fireplace, which is usually special selected thick oak or pear log. It symbolizes the world tree that is connecting heaven and earth and brings order to the world. The Yule log “budnik” is also seen as symbol of fertility and vitality. It is not left to burn the whole. Once extinguished, the people put it behind the door and part is made into a plough. Its ashes have magical healing power and can be used to predict the future.
The Christmas Eve dinner starts early “so the corn to ripen early”. During the meal, none has been allowed to leave the table, only the house keeper may stand up but he walks bend, as the corn grains and tree branches to be bending under the weight of their fruit.

Natural History Museum in Support of the Environmental Education
Tuesday, 21 Dec 2010 - Natural-History Museum

Natural History Museum in Support of the Environmental Education
Project of RIM - Burgas, funded by America for Bulgaria Foundation

This project is an attempt to awaken interest in environmental issues and environmental protection, by students of the technology era. The biology texts may seem monotonous and boring, if served without visual aids. This is a huge obstruction for the absorption of knowledge and drastically reduces the quality of education, which affects the students and limits the enrichment of their culture and knowledge. The team of Natural History exposition - Burgas has developed a methodology, which turns the exhibits examination in the museum into an exciting adventure, especially for younger children. For students with interests in biology it provides a basis and opportunity to deepen their knowledge, and why not to develop them into their future profession.
The project will be implemented in 4 stages:
• Advertising Campaign - publishing and distribution of a wall calendar and museum brochures in any biology study rooms at the Burgas schools. The calendar will contain information about important environmental events - Earth Day, Wetlands Day, Bird Day, etc.
• In early February, eco-club will open doors at the museum. Its main objective will be to raise children with an interest in biology and to provide access to current scientific environmental research. Meetings would be held once a week - mornings and afternoon. Lectures will be held on different biological topics in the form of modern multimedia presentation. The proximity of the museum to the sea garden will help in the early spring, the lectures to be accompanied with excursions to the nature.
• Next stage of the project is to conduct summer Zoo Academy - Adventure in the Museum. For five days the children are divided into two age groups - 14 and over 14 years. The little explorers will get acquainted with the Museum's collections and will be presented with rich biological information in the form of entertaining games with environmental thematic. On the last day of the Zoo Academy, each child will be awarded a diploma.
• An exhibition of materials produced by the children during the summer Zoo Academy will be organized in July.
