138 years of the April Uprising in 1876
Thursday, 17 Apr 2014 - Historical Museum

Although in Burgas at the eve of the April Uprising in 1876, there are no significant signs of national liberation movement, the Bulgarians here were also living in a revolutionary atmosphere. The population of Burgas region successfully established their will to give Bulgarian character of their churches and schools.

Even though, the Bulgarians here were living together with Greeks, Turks, Armenians and others, they did not remain aloof from the revolutionary preparation and spirit. It is only natural, knowing that the Bulgarian Black Sea ports have been channels for secret correspondence and revolutionary activists from Odessa, Central Europe, Constantinople to Lozengrad, Adrianople, Sliven, Yambol, Stara Zagora and Nova Zagora. In 1868-72, the followers of Levski created revolutionary committees in Karnobat, Aitos, Pirne, Goritsa, Kozichino. In Burgas region the most active promoters of Levski's ideas for the preparation of nationwide uprising in Bulgarian territory, were the priests Pop George in Burgas and Pop Dimitar in Karnobat and three teachers: Sava Katrafilov, Stoyan Shivachev and Pentcho Cherkovski. They were supported by the patriotic Bulgarians: Koycho Kehaya, Yani and Yasen Rusaliev and others. They were discussing plans to receive armed rebels from Russia or such trained in the country; to aggregate arms and ammunition in small ports, those plans held in tension the Turkish authorities and caused many arrests and atrocities against the Bulgarian population.

The Archaeological season in Burgas has already started
Friday, 28 Mar 2014 - Archeological Museum

This year Regional Museum Burgas has started the archaeological season already in mid March.

The research of the two most important archaeological sites in Burgas Municipality – Aquae Calidae Terma and Fortress Poros, began on the 17th of March.

The Archaeological studies of ancient and medieval fortress of Poros, situated on Cape Foros near Kraimorie, are headed by the Director of Regional Museum Burgas, Mr. Milen Nikolov. The first stage of the excavations this year is funded again by Foros Development AD, investor company which owns the land.
At the moment, the study focuses on the area designated for construction of water and street infrastructure.

Milen Nikolov pointed out the discovered mortar mixing ditches of the fortress wall, remains of a house from the 6th century and numerous finds, among which the most interesting are the earliest Roman coins found on site - perfectly preserved silver denarius minted during the reign of Septimius Severus (193-211), copper jewelery scales and bronze ekzagia (standard for weight measurement).

The Day of Thrace is associated with the greatest victory of the Bulgarian army during the Balkan War
Tuesday, 25 Mar 2014 - Historical Museum

The Day of Thrace, celebrated on March 26 (new style), is associated with the greatest victory of the Bulgarian army during the Balkan War in 1913 - the Victory at Adrianople. It comes after fierce and bloody battles in Lozengrad, Bunarhisar, Bulair and Chataldzha, resulted in the brilliant successes of the Bulgarian soldier.

Short historical background...

After several months of siege, dark clouds were looming over Edirne. For the Turkish command, in the first hours of the attack on the fort, on March 24, it was clear that the events shall have irreversible development. The commandant of the fort, Shukri Pasha sent to the government in Constantinople (Istanbul) fast telegram:
"The Bulgarians attack "on knife" the forefront of the eastern sector. My soldiers in this sector rebelled against their officers, who wanted to hold them against the enemy. The front positions are abandoned by their defenders who seek refuge behind the lines".

The Fall of the "impregnable" and well fortified Edirne fortress is crucial for the final blow against Turkey. The grueling, yet remarkable operation had come to an end. The battle became famous across Europe and was included in warfare textbooks. The annals of military history marked some warfare innovation from the conduct of the battle - the first air strike, the first combat flight mission of woman, the first usage of radio interference.

The Day of Thrace honours the memory of all outstanding officers and soldiers for more than 100 years after those fateful days, and let them be admired even today for their courage and selflessness.

But the day of Thrace is not just the Victory at Adrianople. It is the memory of those Bulgarian soldiers who perished, defending the fair and justifiable cause for all families and broken dreams. This date itself brings many diverse feelings in all Bulgarians, but mostly the Thracians, those thousands of refugees who were forced to abandon everything and leave their places, yet managed to preserve the memory of their ancestors.

The Island of St. John near Sozopol is now home to a colony of European Shag
Wednesday, 19 Mar 2014 - Natural-History Museum

St. Ivan Island again proves that it is an exceptional place of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
Every year ca. 500 pairs of yellow-legged gulls breed on the cliffs of the islands St.John and St. Peter. This is the largest and probably the only remaining natural colony of this species in Bulgaria. Today after a visit of the area, the team of Natural-history museum Burgas is happy to announce that St. Ivan Island is now home to another colonial species.

On the cliffs several pairs of European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) have built nests and some birds can now incubate the first eggs. Last year a message of one observed a nest of this species on the southern coast appeared in the local media, but without exact location. Today we know for sure, where will build the new colony of European Shag - a species highly vulnerable and endangered, included in the Red Book of Bulgaria.

We ask the residents and visitors of Sozopol, who decided to visit the island of St.John, not to disturb the birds. Please, do not drive them away from their new home.

The species is very rare and poses no threat to the local fishermen. In Bulgaria only about 150 pairs reproduce on the steep cliffs of Cape Shabla and Kaliakra.
