Photo exhibition "The giant fish of Danube" on display in the Natural History Museum of Burgas
Monday, 03 Feb 2014 - Natural-History Museum

[/img]On occasion of 2 February - World Wetlands Day, the Natural History Museum of Burgas will be hosting the photo exhibition of the Historical Museum in Tutrakan

"The giant fish of Danube"

The opening of the exhibition will be on February 5 at 13:30 in the hall of the Natural History Museum (Burgas, 30 K.Fotinov St.)

Donube is the largest river in Europe and habitat for more than 80 species of fish. Some of them are unique to it (Danubian endemic), and others are found in some other major rivers flowing into the Black Sea. In recent years due to human activity, the fish diversity of the river is greatly reduced. Sturgeons are among those who gradually disappear. Only 100 years ago Donube fishermen were catching giant specimens weighing several hundred pounds. Namely those catches were sealed in the photos presented in the exhibition .
Fishing on the Danube is a traditional source of livelihood for the people inhabiting the river banks for tens of thousands of years. The idea of creating a photo archive with giant fish caught by fishermen in the river occurs on occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Ethnographic Museum in Tutrakan. Its author is Velichko Atanasov, curator at the museum. The exhibition presents 32 photographs of starry, perch, catfish and large cod caught over the years in the Bulgarian part of the Danube river. The archive contains photographs, which were made in the 2nd half of the 20th century and most were donated by individuals. The oldest picture is from 1942 - a cod caught near the village of Vruv weighing 393 kg .

The exhibition will remain in Burgas by the end of March 2014

Three Holy Hierarchs - Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom.
Monday, 27 Jan 2014 - Historical Museum

In January the Eastern Christianity honours three saints, who are symbols of divine knowledge and worldly wisdom - St.Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom and St. Gregory the Theologian. While each of them has a separate holy-day, in 1084 it was decided that the three saints shall be honoured in a common feast day in order to show their great importance to the theological science. Nowadays, by decision of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the day of the Three Holy Hierarchs has been celebrated since the 30s of the twentieth century as patronal day of religious schools, institutes and theological faculties, and these great hierarchs as celestial and spiritual patrons of all Orthodox spiritual schools.

When referring to Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom, the words used to describe them are divine, perfect, inimitable convincing in their speech, skilled interpreters of scriptures with unsurpassed elegance of expression. These holy men surpass all words and deeds, in no way inferior to the angels, most humane, understanding the weakness of human nature. When we look at the written heritage of these Three Wise Men, we will be convinced of the truth of these claims.
Their infinite wisdom is timeless, not only in the knowledge of God, but for the life of searches. Because, frankly, people have not changed much and always need guidance. Yes, yes, still "there is nothing new under the sun"!

On 17 and 18 January we honour the memory of two Great saints - St. Anthony and St. Anastasius
Wednesday, 15 Jan 2014 - Historical Museum

„Virtue is not created outside of us. The Kingdom of God is within us, so virtue needs our will”
St. Anthony

On January 17 the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of Saint Anthony the Great, popular in the Bulgarian folk tradition as Antonovden.
St. Anthony is one of the first ascetics, ie loners (monks) who chose life separated from the material world and stay in deserts or remote mountains to attain spiritual upliftment. St. Anthony was born around 251 AD in Middle Egypt in a wealthy family. He decided to become an ascetic at very young age and to seek a different path to enlightenment of the mind. After giving away everything that he possessed and he settled in a tomb carved in the rocks. Trying to dramatically change his lifestyle, Anthony was forced to lead a tough fight with the demons of temptation. Convinced that fortitude strengthens when weaken body pleasures, the ascetic spent his entire youth in retreat. Finally, achieving peace of mind, Anthony became the father of many monks who founded monasteries or inhabited separate cells in the rocks, guided them, presented them with moral lectures.
