St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is one of the most righteous Christian saints, honoured since ancient times in the settlements along the Bay of Burgas and regarded as a master of the sea, tamer of storms and sea elements. It is believed that the saint Wonderworker is sailing on a golden ship and he can be always found at the place where people are in need of assistance.
The tradition dictates that no fisherman, sailor or member of their families may work on St. Nicholas Day, and neither shall any vessel or boat enter into the sea, except for the ritual of remembrance.
On the table at home people put a dish called Ribnik – it is made out of carp stuffed with rice, bulgur, walnuts and raisins, cooked coated in batter. Over the dough the spine, tail and head of the fish are outlined. On the table the Ribnik dish is broken so as to preserve the head bones in the shape of a cross, which is cast into the sea for health and wellbeing.
