
The Burgas Museum has published a scientific collection dedicated to Prof. Dr. Ivan Karayotov. A brilliant scholar, perhaps the most famous numismatist in Bulgaria over the past 50 years, an epigrapher, archaeologist, one of the founders of maritime archaeology in Bulgaria, and an honorary citizen of Burgas. Prof. Karayotov was a curator at the Burgas Museum for over 30 years. He had an excellent knowledge of the archaeological monuments and sites in the Burgas region. Over the years, individually or as part of a team, he conducted archaeological excavations at many and diverse sites scattered throughout the region – the village of Ravadinovo, the island of St. Anastasia, the village of Ruen, Malko Tarnovo, near Mandrensko Lake, near Lozarevo, near Aytos, in the area of the Neftochimic Complex, in Pomorie, near Kableshkovo, near Golyamo Bukovo, near Dragantsi (Karnobat area), near Vratitsa (Kameno municipality), near Bryastovets, near Orizare, and in the town of Nesebar itself… Extremely moral, empathetic, an encyclopedist in the fullest sense of the word, a university lecturer, fluent in several foreign and classical languages... Teacher of a generation of young scholars, including experts at the Burgas Regional History Museum. The collection is published as volume 9 of the Reports of the Burgas Museum. It includes contributions from 36 scholars from Bulgaria and abroad, representing national, regional, and municipal museums, research institutes under the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Culture, and the National Academy of Arts. The sections in the volume cover numismatics and sgraffito, maritime archaeology, archaeology, history, and conservation and restoration. The editorial board consists of Prof. Dr. Ivan Hristov – chief scientific editor, Dr. Igor Lazarenko, Dr. Milen Nikolov, Dr. Dragomir Gǎrbov. The compiler is Dr. Milen Nikolov. The publication is funded by the Burgas Regional History Museum and the Municipality of Burgas. The official presentation of the collection to the general public is forthcoming.
