On November 6, 2025, at 4 p.m., an exhibition will be opened at the Archaeological Exhibition of RIM-Bourgas on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the rescue archaeological research by specialists from the Burgas Museum of a rich grave of an aristocrat in the necropolis of Anhialo.
The large group of cult objects among the finds testifies that the noble lady, whose name is assumed to be Leseskepra, performed religious rites during her lifetime. The gold ornaments are among the most exquisite creations of jewelry art in ancient Thrace during the transition from late Hellenism to the early Roman Empire.
The guest of the event will be Dr. Anton Karabashev, director of HM-Pomorie. He will give a lecture with a presentation on the topic:
"Status of Archaeological Research in the Necropolis of Ancient Anchialos"
New archaeological discoveries in recent years have deepened our knowledge of the construction and development of Ulpia Anchialos near present-day Pomorie as a significant economic and cultural center during the Roman and late antique eras. They have enriched our knowledge of the history and material culture of the city and its region with unknown data.
The studies in the necropolis of the ancient city through excavations and accidental discoveries provide rich material and information about the burial facilities, the manner of burials, the rituals associated with them, the funerary gifts, etc. Along with the flat graves in the necropolis of Anchialos, there are also mound graves, the latter being less common. Undoubtedly, the most remarkable monument in the area of the necropolis of Anchialos is the Ancient Dome Tomb - Heroon. It is one of the largest in Bulgaria and experts date it to the period II - IV century AD. Its architectural concept intertwines Thracian funeral traditions with Roman cult construction.
The presentation will examine the main results of the research conducted over the years in the necropolis of Anchialos. Attention will be paid to issues related to the peculiarities of the historical topography, the character and structure of the necropolis area, the chronology of the monument, the characteristics of the funeral rite, the material and spiritual culture of the inhabitants of the ancient city.
The registered and studied flat and mound graves show the extraordinary density of these remarkable remains of the ancient past, evidence of the unshakable faith of the ancient Thracians in the existence of another world after death.
