With spring approaching, the Ethnographic Exhibition of the Regional Museum of History in Burgas (69 Slavyanska Street) is once again opening its doors to the "Martenitsa Workshop." From February 17 to February 28, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., we invite all students to visit us and create their own martenitsa. The martenitsa carries a message of health, prosperity, and happiness. Within one hour, with the help of the curators from the Regional Museum of History in Burgas, the children will learn about the materials used to make the martenitsa. Is it only white and red, or can we add other colors? How long do we wear it and when can we take it off?
The price for participation in the workshop is BGN 4.00 per child.
What is included: a talk with a presentation about martenitsas and making a martenitsa.
Duration: one hour per group.
Please call 056 842 587 to pre-register groups of up to 20 children.
The First of March ritual occupies an important place in the annual festive cycle. It marks the transition from winter to spring. On the eve of March 1, the house must be cleaned – clothes, blankets, and fabrics must be dusted, the house must be aired out and washed. At sunrise, the housewife takes out a red apron, a path, a headscarf, and throws them on the fence, the eaves, or a tree in the yard to appease Baba Marta and make her smile. And everyone in the house, close relatives and neighbors, and domestic animals are tied with intertwined white and red thread. The martenitsa is perceived as an amulet and carries the idea of health, fertility, and luck.
