Saint George's Day

Saint George's Day

St. George's Day is the biggest Bulgarian spring feast that marks the beginning of summer and the new husbandry year. It is connected with the awakening of nature and the scent of flowers, grass and herbs. It is celebrated on the day of the Christian Saint George, who in the folk tradition is the patron saint of shepherds and flocks.
The typical husbandry rituals are interwoven with customs related to agriculture and ritual practices to ensure the health and wellbeing of people and animals. They are practised mostly outside the village - in pens, green meadows, the fields near rivers and springs.
